During the Madness and Arts Festival in Haarlem (Sept 24th - Oct 3rd 2010) GIP will organize two events:
September 29th 12.30 – 14.00 Roundtable Meeting | Exporting Western Psychiatry to LAMIC
Can you practise Western Psychiatry in LAMIC countries, what can we learn from psychiatry as it is practiced in LAMIC countries, and why is Mental Health an unpopular theme in development aid programs?   A psychiatrist, a journalist and a behavioural scientist discuss their recent experiences in Burundi and other low-income counties. The public is welcome to join in the discussion!
October 1st 13.30 - 17.30 Public Meeting | International Perspective
Like anywhere else in the World, in low and middle-income countries people with a mental illness are severely stigmatized and excluded from society. Rob Keukens (Mental Health Consultant GIP) and Douwe van der Heide (Transcultural Psychiatrist) will speak about their work in countries in the former Soviet Union, in Sri Lanka, Curacao and South Africa. Nino Agdgomelashvili (project manager GIP - Tbilisi) will talk about fighting stigma in Georgia and how art can contribute to effective anti-stigma campaigns.

More upcoming events

On October 14th 2010, World Mental Health Day, GIP will organize a conference at the European Parliament in Brussels. The conference will be the final activity of a two year EU project titled: Increasing Recognition of Mental Heath as an Integral Part of European Development Assistance in Four EU Countries. The goal of the project is to raise awareness in four countries of the European Union (as well as at the EU-level and among other development actors) about mental health as a developmental aid issue.
GIP will also be celebrating her 30th anniversary at this event!

Closing Conference of the Mental Health Battle - On April 7th 2010 in Amersfoort
On World Health Day the winners of the Mental Health Battle will be announced!  For more information about the Mental Health Battle click here. 

Program 13.30 – 16.00 hours:
The key speaker Florence Baingana (psychiatrist and public health specialist from Uganda) will talk about mental health projects in low-income countries. Robert van Voren (director GIP) will share the successes and failures of 30 years development aid and Willem van der Put (director HealthNet TPO) will present his complete film 'Psychiatry unchained'. Finally the outcome of the essays will be presented and the winners will be announced! The winning team will visit a mental health project in Burundi.

On October 14th 2009 GIP and HealthNet TPO organized a Conference on Mental Health and Development Aid in Amersfoort. It was a great succes and there where 90 to 100 people, read more
